Early Treatment

Timing is everything – even when it comes to your child’s orthodontic treatment. “Early” treatment, also called “interceptive” treatment, means treatment that is performed while some baby teeth are still present.

Early Treatment is Key

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child receive his or her first orthodontic screening by age 7. A timely evaluation is beneficial to recognize potential problems and correct them before they become more serious. Orthodontic appliances maybe placed in early treatment to prevent a problem from occurring, correct a current problem or help direct jawbone growth. Early treatment can save your child time and save you money.

By age 12, most, if not all, permanent teeth have erupted and are in place. This is when crooked teeth, gaps and bad bites can easily be detected. These problems will hardly ever correct themselves so it is important parents have their child seen by a specialist such as an orthodontist for an exam.

Braces not only help create a beautiful smile for aesthetic reasons, but when the teeth are properly aligned can allow for better hygiene and care. As a result this can potentially prevent expensive dental and gum treatment down the road. For many teenagers, wearing braces is a part of life – an important part of life because a beautiful and healthy smile can boost one’s self-confidence.
